Why we built Kimox: networking that gets out of the way

Every infrastructure team I have worked with shares the same frustration: the network is never quite ready when you need it. You spin up a service in a new region, and suddenly you are in a three-week queue for a site-to-site VPN change request. You hire a remote engineer, and IT hands them a client that drops connections every time they switch coffee shops.

At my last company, we counted the hours. Our platform team spent roughly 30% of each sprint on connectivity work — not building features, but keeping the pipes open. Bastion hosts needed patching. IP allowlists drifted out of sync. On-call pages spiked whenever someone rotated an SSH key.

We started Kimox because we believed connectivity should be a solved problem. Not solved in the sense of "buy a bigger VPN appliance," but solved in the sense that two machines should be able to talk to each other securely, regardless of where they sit on the internet, without anyone opening inbound ports or drawing network diagrams on whiteboards.

Kimox is a mesh. Every device, server, and container runs a lightweight agent that establishes encrypted peer-to-peer tunnels using WireGuard-grade cryptography. There is no central concentrator choking your bandwidth. There is no single point of failure. When a peer moves from your office Wi-Fi to a cellular hotspot, the tunnel re-establishes automatically through NAT traversal.

Identity replaces IP addresses. You write access policies in terms of tags and groups — "tag:production can reach tag:database" — instead of maintaining spreadsheets of CIDR blocks that go stale the moment someone migrates a workload. MagicDNS gives every node a stable hostname, so your configs do not break when DHCP shuffles addresses.

We are not trying to replace your entire security stack. Kimox sits underneath your applications and gives them a private network to live on. You still use your IdP for authentication. You still run your SIEM for log aggregation. But the layer that used to require a dedicated networking team now takes minutes to set up and virtually zero maintenance.

Our early customers connected a thousand nodes across fourteen regions in a week. They reduced open firewall rules by ninety percent. Incident response got faster because engineers could reach any server directly, without filing a ticket for bastion access.
